I just picked up a 03 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO yesterday that was in really good shape and not used much. One thing I wanted to do is improve the lower lights in the grill area and was wondering if there is a brighter replacement bulb I could get that will not burn up the housing or wiring? The only numbers I find on the bulbs are 81169 which doing a search on the net does not turn up much. Thanks for any help.

I believe that your bulb is a 800 series.

HIDs are the only way to go if you want some serious lighting.

Like every one here is telling you, if you want brighter lights upgrade to HID`s they are way brighter than any stock bulb. I have them on my ATV and there a huge improvement over stock. Check out Hey! ATV Parts and Accessories are Here! , that`s were i got my kit from, and its all plug and play.

Here is a picture of my set up.

With some of the models, the only replacement bulb available is from popo. They engineered stuff that way so that you have to buy their parts.

When you consider the cost of 2 lightbulbs for your machine, if you just double your money you can get a set of hids.

I am looking for a HID bulb kit

I forgot to mention that the reason why I want to know the bulb size is to replace the bulbs with a HID kit. I cant find a HID bulb that will fit my 2004 polaris 700 low beams. I asked earlier if the 880 fit the low beams and I was told only if it was a 880 bulb. So I do not know if it is a 880 bulb all I know is that the low beams bulb are model 81169. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks

Here is a possible solution

This is a overpriced proprietary part from Polaris, but it is only the base of the bulb assembly that seems to be different, if you grab the bulb from the base where the brass part holds the glass bulb into the plastic base, give it a little wiggle back and forth and pull it out, it will come straight out and is not glued into it, and can be put back into place easily, only the brass part holds the bulb in place and the contacts rest in the plastic base easily, its a pretty basic assembly. Anyway once this is removed it looks like they took a standard 12v 35-40 watt auto bulb and bent the contacts into an L shape. I took apart a bulb from my 98 Chevy truck I had laying around, and they are the same bulb with the same contacts extending out of the bulb. the ones from the chevy just need to be bent into an L, except the chevy bulb was soldered onto the contacts unlike the Polaris one, I am on my way to the auto parts store to find the base bulb because I destroyed the bulb in the process of taking it apart. I didnt figure out it was soldered until I pulled too hard, I will repost if I find the right bulb and can make it work. Polaris robs you for a simple light bulb and forces such measures,

Can anyone tell me what the model of the bulb is in the light by the handlebars on an 08′ 800 sportsman? There must be an aftermarket bulb to cross over?

the newer sportsman’s use the 50 watt “ge 886” in all three headlights

Hmmm….anyway to find out for certain the wattage? I’d hate to burn up the factory harness with a bulb that’s too hot…

I can’t figure out why the dims are the bumper lights and the high beams is the handlebar light??
