is a switch on a dashboard for headlight range adjustment (the one next to headlight switch) electrical or pneumatical? mine has 4 positions (0, 1, 2, 3) i cannot feel any “click” sound when the switch is on 3. beside that i can feel the resistance (when i turn the switch) is different between 2 and 3 (loose) in comparison to one between 0 and 2. can i conclude the switch is dead?

next, my pse pump and distribution block at the passanger’s footwell are ok. what is the next chance that i cannot change headlight range?

check the headlights, see if the vacuum pipes are connected to them (at the center). if not, then you have an explaination for why they don’t work

my car has an aftermarket xeonon light conversion, and thus the headlight range adjuster doesn’t work.

yes the lines are ok.

in the meantime i have learnt that the switch in the dash is pneumatical.

after i have loosen lines from valve block (passanger footwell) the lights went into neutral position which corresponds to position 0 of the switch in the dash. so it seems that the pneumatic system holds vacuum well and logically the switch itself is broken. of course one can never be sure ….

you could always buy a used one for 10 euro:

that is, if the problem annoys you

that is so cool! mine does not have this.. is it possible to implement it on a 97 coupe?!

my xenons move down and up when i turn them on for the first time, so i’m assuming it can be adjusted, or is that just a look cool feature of the car?

must admit, i love the headlights giving a bow before driving. whenever anyone sees them, they just sat “daaayyuuumm” including me every time… never gets old haha.

there is some law in europe requiring xenon lights to have auto-leveling built into the lights, so i don’t think you can adjust xenon lights. but again, just something i’ve heard.

my lights don’t give a bow :-/

thanks paul for useful info. do you maybe know what is the price for a new one?

i think (not sure!) european models w140 do not have autoleveling of headlights. i assume they only have 4 positions of range adjustment in case that the vehicle is equipped with a trailer.

i have got another aspect of this adjustment.

if i park in front of a wall and then change from “0” to 1,2,3… i can clearly see how the beam goes down immediately, as wanted. then when i turn back 3,2,1… it does not come back quickly – seems to stay low. then i usually think “it is broken”… but next time when i drive and park at a wall again and turn 0,1,2… the beam goes down again. so it was back to upper position in the meantime somehow – but not immediately.

do you have any thoughts why is this, or you have seen the same?

i think my lights would not go up even after one week. they were stacked.

i think in both cases (mine, yours) the switch in the dash is bad. however yours at least releases the vacuum after some time, mine does not react in either way (letting the vacuum into the lights or release it). i am pretty sure this is true because deafult position of lights is up (position 0) so if actuators in the lights or vacuum lines would be bad then lights would stay highest possible.

adjustable headlights… or not.

this seems to be quite old thread, but for me (new member) it’s new. because i’m living in finland, northern europe, i have some accurate info about these xenon headlights. at least here in finland, there has to be auto leveling function. the annual inspection requires this automatic leveling of the xenon-headlights. if you have halogen (h4) headlights, you have to have manual leveling possibility since 1995.
