In 1951, Harley-Davidson Servi-Cars were upgraded to hydraulic rear drum brakes. The raise brakes remained the same until 1973, when buttocks disk brakes were fitted. This article covers back Servi-car brakes found on 1951 through 1972 models .
many rear Servi-car bracken parts are the lapp as 1948 thru 1963 Willys Jeeps. Harley-Davidson did not make these parts, they bought them from an outside source. These parts include the overlord cylinder, bicycle cylinders, and brake shoes. I have learned through experience that there are more ( and better ) classical Jeep suppliers than there are Servi-car suppliers .
Removing Rear Drums
To take off the rear cram, first remove the embattled axle testis and cotter peg. Do not try to bang off the brake drum with a hammer if it does n’t come off easily – it ‘s a tapered suit on the rear axle. You will need to use an allow puller to remove the drum – a slide hammer with puller attachment works well .
once the bracken drum is removed, you will find an axle shaft spacer behind the cram. There is besides a 1/4 ” straight key that fits into a slot on the axle shaft. Applying a thin application of anti-seize on the end tapers would be a good idea when re-assembling.

Servi-Car Rear Shoes and Hardware
The rear Servi brake shoes are 9 ” x 1-3/4 ”. They are the same as the 1948 thru 1963 Willys Jeeps. Same as shoes that paroxysm Willys exemplar M38A1 ( separate # 807376 ). Brake horseshoe hardware for 1951-1972 Harley Servi-cars includes one ( long ) render spring on the top and one ( curtly ) retainer spring on the bottom for each side. There are besides four brake brake shoe hold-down clips, two for each side ( one for each shoe ). If needed, shims are may need to be installed behind the rise back plates. These are a “ use as required ” function to correctly space the support plates from the flange mounts on the axle tubes .
Kaiser Willys Auto Supply is an old jeep parts company that ( unwittingly ) sells Servi-car brake parts. I ‘ve gotten parts from them on several occasions .
To install the back shoes, first gear attach them at the bottom with the brusque form. then install the hold-down clips. Next, wrinkle up the brake shoe “ ears ” into the sides of the wheel cylinder. You will need a pair of brake spring pliers to install the exceed ( longer ) form .
Servi-Car Master Cylinder
no longer available from Harley-Davidson, the master cylinder can still be obtained through most car parts stores. The aftermarket Wagner share # FE2693 fits 1951-1972 Harley trikes, american samoa well as 1948 thru 1963 Willys Jeeps. The center-to-center gobble hole length for the Servi master-cylinder is 3-7/16 ” .
note that earlier 1941-1947 Jeep master cylinders are about identical, but have a thunderbolt center length of 3-1/8 ” and the front mounting hole is threaded. They would work on the Servi-car, but would not fit the frame bracket correctly.
Servi-car Wheel Cylinders
rear bicycle cylinders for the Harley 45 trikes have a 7/8 ” give birth and are the same from 1951 to 1972. You may placid be able to decree them from an car parts shop .
Servicar Steel Brake Lines
You can buy or fabricate steel bracken lines. Three are needed, left-side, right-side, and chief cylinder to junction block .
There is a condom brake hose runs from the rear of the maestro to a four-way junction obstruct mounted to the rear axle. besides on the junction forget is a hydraulic stop-light interchange, which lights up the brake lights when imperativeness is applied .
The right-side foot-brake linkage connects the battlefront foot lever to the rear pivot bracket. It is comprised of pivot pry OEM # 83525-51, pivot gobble # 83528-51 ( with grease fit ), and clevis pin kit out # 42269-30 .
Bleeding Servi-Car Rear Brakes
Because the Servi-car overcome cylinder sits lower than the steering wheel cylinders do, bleeding brakes by graveness is not possible. therefore here was my second choice. Attach a length of 3/16 ” clear tube ( from an aquarium pump or something alike ) to the hemophiliac fuck, and submerge the other end into a clear container filled with a match inches of brake fluent.

Doing one slope at a time, open the hemophiliac, and depress the pedal. Close the hemophiliac before you release the pedal. Repeat this routine until you get fluid with no air bubbles, then go to the other side. Go back to the first side and check that no air from the other side entered that line. If your master cylinder is in good condition, bleeding the brakes should only take 10-15 minutes .
Servi-car Brake Pedal Adjustment
With the back of the tricycle up on jack stands, rotate the rear wheels and check for excessive embroil. The brake rod should be adjusted sol the brakes do n’t take effect until the animal foot bicycle is about an edge down. When by rights adjusted, the brakes should be amply applied before the infantry pedal point goes all the direction down .
