I have a 2016 ST3 and was wondering is it possible to swap the HID bulbs to LED bulbs in the stock projector housings? And if so, how can it be done?

Yes you can buy just the LED bulbs on amazon and they fit in the housing I bought Cougar Motors LED headlight kit for like $45 and it’s plug and play, haven’t had any issues and super bright. The connection feels a little loose but nothing some tight electrical tape doesn’t fix.

Can I get link for the LEDs you ordered?

im not sure how youll be able to fit an led bulb in that housing and have it work. youd need to somehow modify the wiring and delete the OEM ballasts since HID’s run on voltage WAY higher than what any other bulb takes. theres NO way i can see it being plug and play without modifications.

you can probably just get aftermarket housings that are designed to take different bulbs.

I was hoping there would be an easier way to do it. I like the stock housings and dont want to drop that much money on new housings right now. I just dont like the color of the hids. I rather have a whiter look but not blue.

you should be able to get different d3s/d8s OSRAM bulbs with a different color temp. might need a new OSRAM ballast as well. stock USDM HID’s are d8s 25w, i believe. ive heard people doing d3s swaps with different bulbs and 35w OSRAM ballasts. theres a thread on here somewhere

Changing color temp is of course up to you, but the temp of the bulbs stock is chosen because it provides the most visible light to the human eye for night driving. There are charts out there that show the difference in the amount of light output and how far it illuminates. Anyway the proper LED’s in their correct housings are actually whiter with a blue edge on them on the current Ford vehicles with them than the bi-Xenons.

Why change the Xenon bulbs? You’re not going to get better light output.

Typically that is true but not all bulbs are created equal any more. I can tell you that my Osram CBI 5000k bulbs are brighter than the oem color, if we are measuring by lumins https://www.theretrofitsource.com/bulbs/d3s-osram-xenarc-66340-cbi.html Not that going from 4300k to 5000k is a dramatic difference in color (I wouldn’t suggest going 6000k or above)

The downside is cost, there is definitely a premium for them. However, if going through the trouble of converting from the d8s 25w to a 35w setup in the early ST’s, you are doing it for the output. Might as well get the brightest you can.
