Noticed my dashboard lights seem to go from dim to bright and dim again during the course of a morning commute. Headlights on. Is this an added option I didn’t know about? Thanks '05 RX 330 Dashboard Lights - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion

Yes there is a light sensor that senses how dim it gets in the cabin. If lets say you drive through a tunnel or underpass for long period of time with your headlights on…the dash lights will dim or brighten to the conditions accordingly. I believe this is a C-BEST setting that can be defeated.

For my case, the dashboard light (including monitor), will dim whenever I switch-on the headlight. Initially, I though my battery was weak, but it is still the same after I changed to new battery.

Any idea how to rectify that? I dont think it is normal '05 RX 330 Dashboard Lights - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion

That’s the way mine behaves.

When you switch on the headlights, the car “thinks” it’s night so it dims the dashboard.

You can change the sensitivity, but it appears that you can’t turn it off completely.

C-BEST settings are “DISP EX ON SEN” and “DISP EX OFF SEN”, which stands for “Display Extinction On|Off Sensitivity”. Changing the “ON” affects how much light change will dim the display, and changing the “OFF” affects how much light change will brighten the display back up. Choices for both are LIGHT2, LIGHT1, NORMAL, DARK1, DARK2; default is NORMAL.

I think all cars will dim the dash and radio lights when the headlights are turned on. In the case of the 330, it does so if you go into a dark area (tunnel, etc) when the sensor determines headlights are needed. It will dim the nav, radio, and dash when the headlights are on. I see this on the way home from work some nights, when going through a wooded area.

The nav screen is FAR too bright at night, so it’s a good feature in my opinion. It changes it to have a black background instead of a bright white background.

If you wish to disable the internal dimming, you can operate the dial just to the left of the steering wheel. This is the dash brightness adjustment, and if you turn it to the far right until it clicks, it will force it to always be in “headlights off/day mode”. The headlights will still come on as needed, but the dash brightness will not change. The second method is to turn the headlights from AUTO to OFF(or ON) when you don’t wish to have the sensor making the decision.

I hope this is helpful!

Mike
