hi

my girlfriends coming to visit me, so i need to go and pick her up at the airport tonight. its 60 miles down the motorway and i need to carry a spare helmet for her on the way there. whats the best and most secure way to do this do you reckon? i couldn’t make my mind up myself.

cheers.

if i am going to pick the missus up i usually take my rucksack and open the visor, putting the two clips from the top flap through it. i don’t notice it while riding as it will be sat on the pillion seat.
hope this makes sense.

i agree with davo, cargo net and whack it in the pillion seat. nice and secure and no worries about having it on your back in a rucksack.

put the helmet in a backpack. i know our thinking my helmet won’t fit but there are some bags out there that can fit a helmet easily. and i suggest you put a lock on the back zippers. when i was on the motorway going at a high speed there was a heavy side wind and the bag suddenly opened and i lost my helmet, tooth brush, perfume, medicine, etc.

another way that i learned 2weeks ago is to tie the helmet straps around the pillion seat (if it has a strap). it’s not such a bad idea unless if there are lots of bends.

not that i am a safety nazi or anything, but if you have a spill with a helmet in a backpack, you will be fooked! likely to break your back even at low speed.

i used this to, however on the way back from the bmf the lid scrached the paint behind the rear seat. so if you do use one be aware.

i would use the cargo net, and as for scratches, put an old tea towel under it so it protects your paint work

to be honest keen, i’d be more worried about getting home the mammoth sized suitcase she’s likely to be carrying for the visit. regardless of how long she’ll be visiting for, you can be sure there will be at least a dozen paris of shoes with her carrying a spare helmet...

i used to cargo net it onto the back seat, but since getting my tankbag, it’s easily placed in there without much hesitation.
i hate having to carry a spare lid in my backpack as depending on how you place it, it juts into your spine and it’s not entirely comfortable for a 12 mile london journey, let alone a 6 miler! cargo nets are 4 quid each, whereas a spill and a slipped disk costs much more!

ha. don’t worry shes been informed that anything other than a backpack of stuff will be staying at the airport carrying a spare helmet... shes used to riding pillion now so she knows the way it is.

i’m gonna cargo net it to the pillion seat then (and tie it down with a strap under the seat, and lock it to the grab rail carrying a spare helmet... )… i normally just carry it on my arm but its a bit far. should be fine, cheers for the advice carrying a spare helmet...

i use my tankbag. i have to extend it to fit the helmet in, but it works like a treat. i can’t recommend tankbags enough for carrying bits and bats around carrying a spare helmet...

i either use my tank bag as its expandable.

or i use a few bungy cords, run them through the helmet from the bottom and up through the visor hole, and then tie them down to the bars under my plastics around the pillion seat.

simple as carrying a spare helmet... the tension of both bungees pulling the helmet in both directions keeps it nice and sturdy,

i would be worried about it coming off my bike if i used bungee cords. imaging the damage it could cause to cars/bikes behind you if your helmet went flying off!!! carrying a spare helmet...

i find bungees through the helmet face (visor open), and then a cargo net over the top will do you fine.

if in doubt about how secure it is, add more bungees!

cargo net quick n easy but safest way also, to stop bags etc sliding around when strapped onto the back seat, use an anti slip mat cut to size, they sell them to go under floor mats, they come cheeper off the market or from the pound shop.

with the aid of this crappy drawing i’ll show you how i carry a spare helmet:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/helmetandbag656353.jpg

if you carry it like that it doesn’t stick into your spine and it rests on the seat anyway so you don’t even notice it’s there. that’s how i do it anyway as my bag is plenty big enough to carry a helmet and some other stuff like waterproofs/lunch.

wilcos do huge rolls of the stuff in loads of colours for not much..

would only carry it in a bag for a very sort distance carrying a spare helmet...

i’ve got an adjustable bungee thing i keep on the bike for carrying elmits, you can get similar things easy enough carrying a spare helmet...
