probably been gone over a million times so i apologise in advance.

i’m going to be getting a new helmet, i’ve been looking at some bell helmets, some arai’s etc.

question is i usually just buy black, but i’ve noticed both myself and my bike are all black and i’m sure i’m not that noticable.

so i’m trying to resist the temptation of buying black, recent colours i’ve viewed and liked on bell helmets are:-

1)black/white/red a bit like the flag of france from top to bottom (the red part forming a circle on top of the head).

2)all navy / white&red band going down the back of the helmet vertically and horizontally across chin level.

3)all silver/black&red band horizontal across chin level-

4)all black, with gold lines.

quite like no.3 the silver one but i fear it’s the least noticable helmet.

any ideas?

if they can’t notice your headlights, coming down the road, then i can’t see a different colour helmet making a difference tbh.

if you are worried about not being seen, i’d add more lights, or wear a high vis vest, if that’s your cup of tea. (not mine personally)

as mentioned, lights and/or high vis are likely to be more noticeable than most lids.
your safety is more likely to improve with better riding skills, more experience, and a healthy sense of paranoia on the roads.

my first lid was a yellow and white v-flyer
https://is00.thegumtree.com/image/extrabig/+61404532026.jpg

and my current lid is a grey and black duchinni
https://www.thevisorshop.com/acatalog/d419gunclosed.1kpx.17340.jpg

and to be honest the majority of cagers wouldn’t notice any difference whatsoever…. lets face it, some of them fail to notice emergency vehicles with blue flashing lights on them…. colour of helmet? important?

i’m not convinced it makes any difference.

when i bought my first road lid, i humoured my parents and bought a plain white one, but since then i’ve had predominantly white, red and black lids and i get the same number of people doing mad things in front of me, whatever i’ve been wearing.

i don’t care now, i just select the lid that fits best and then the colour scheme i like the most.

there are two camps with the high vis gear and helmets.

one group says that it helps you be seen, you are more visible etc etc (most people) and that youa re safer wearing bright gear. truth is, there has been very little research to validate this as it seems obvious to most people. truth is that when people are not seen the drivers often do look first, but don’t recognise the shape coming at them as a motorcyclist (we are quite rare on the roads) when they are looking for cars. the result is that they look but don’t see, this is important for me next point.

the other group say that hi vis gear, bright lids, bright coloured bikes and daylight running lights actually helps camoflague you in an urban environment by breaking up your silhouette, much like real camo gear, zebra stripes, tiger stripes and these ship’s paintjobs do:

https://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/razzledazzle.jpg

in the ships case it did a very good job of preventing bombers from estimating the size, type shape and direction of the boats. as it happens, several things i’d like drivers to be able to estimate about me. another thing is that it has been noted that people recognise a one colour silhouette easier than a random coloured object with a light at the front.

in addition, you think you are safer wearing hi vis gear so you subconciously take more risk to compensate. we are all guilty of this even if we don’t know it. if you were to try driving a car without a seatbelt, or riding without gear, without a helmet etc etc then your riding would be different as you percieve the risk to be higher and ride safer as a result, opposite is true when you feel safe, you compensate by taking more risk.

there was a study of ny cabbies a decade or so ago, half fitted with abs (and aware of it) half without. data loggers were fitted without the cabbies knowledge to the cars top monitor braking force, acceleration force and general driving habits. the ones with abs drove significantly riskier than those without and were involved in more accidents.

just my 2p, as it happens i wear a white and black lid, black gear and ride a yellow bike so clearly i don’t even take my own advice.

i like those ships in camoflage. but it means i’m a goner – it matches the sticker pattern on me bike, while the rest of me is camo trousers, black helmet and brown jacket. making me near invisible without the high vis vest/fluttery cape colour of helmet? important?

agreed, there’s very little hard evidence either way, since collision figures (at most) only count whether visibility gear was being worn, or lights were on.

but that doesn’t tell you anything by itself. the hurt report found that only 2 riders out of 900 involved in multi-vehicle collisions were wearing what they classed as highly visible jackets. yay, hi-vis. but that was in the 1970s. for all we know, there may have been fewer than 1 in 450 riders wearing high vis then, and those 2 riders might have been over represented in the collision figures.

even if it does turn out that vizzed up bikes are in fewer accidents per mile than stealth rangers, that doesn’t necessarily tell you anything about whether the gear itself has an effect: it could be a case of safety conscious riders wear high-vis gear, rather than high-vis gear making you safer.

all that said, i personally choose to go with lights on, high vis orange jacket (rst enduro), white helmet. when i change helmets, i’ll need to find a reason to not go with a kbc tarmac, caberg konda or other hi-vis lid.

not helmet related but my commute involves a 8-10 mile filter down the motorway every morning. i really do notice the difference when i am wearing my hi-vis vest. people do seem to see you that bit quicker and move over.

not so conviced the helmet will help unless its reflective.

i started riding in feb, so my gear was bought with highest visibility in mind. i have a caberg konda hi-viz helmet, and flu-yellow jacket with armoured trousers that are yellow from the knee up (not really visible, but just to complete the colour co-ordination really).

i’m beginning to think it’s a bit extreme though, especially riding out in daylight, so i’m looking to tone down my appearance, since i think i’m an improved and safe rider (as safe as one can be).

hi

not convinced the colour of the lid makes any great difference, and at times black might stand out more. if they have managed to miss a large shiney bike with lights then they are probably beyond help.

you could make a point that headlights on confuses peoples perception of speed, and bright clothing / lid might make you safer with your headlight off. you could also make the point that bright clothing / lid will make you easier to spot should you come off and be left lying in a ditch.

suspect some of the effect of people “noticing” high vis jackets is a mental association with a copper on a bike. rogerborgs point on a 1970s study is interesting. when i started riding a bike (1987) high vis clothing was very unusual.

all the best

i have my own theory on this, but of course i may be totally wrong.

broken designs as pointed out before with the great battleship images may actually be counter-productive.

in my own experience i tend to notice a lot less the colours that are usual, or blend well with backgrounds. so silver is pretty bad one as a lot of britain is grey, pavements, the cloudy skies etc and i really find silver bikes are the least noticable blending in most.

all black isn’t too bad but not the best either. hi-viz too i don’t find too great either, at night with a light shone on it maybe, but in the day time the yellow just seems to blend with the everyday surroundings. a brand new hi viz does better.

imo the most noticable bikes and colour i can think of and have seen around are those in all red. there is nothing in nature or natural that comes out as a bright red colour. yellows, browns, blacks, greens and some blues all occur in nature and our surrounding environments.

anyway i have a black bike, but may consider an all red helmet, it will certainly stand out. only trouble is if someone’s colour blind!

unfortunately, there is research that strongly suggests red is rather a bad colour for visibility.

it turns grey in low light conditions (dusk, poor weather) and black at night, it also registers very poorly in peripheral vision tests.

there was a survey done a few years ago by an insurance company (i’m sure it’s on the net somewhere) where red came top in both the safest and most dangerous colour tables, but a higher percentage of people thought it was dangerous (less visible).

the safest colours, under most conditions, are white and yellow but, as myself and others have said, if they haven’t already spotted a 6′, 15 stone bloke on a chuffing great bike, wearing a white lid isn’t likely to make much difference.

it’s not the colour of the helmet that makes you safe, if you think it is, stop motorcycling.

going down the road thinking i’m safe now, i’ve got a safe coloured crash helmet on, has never entered my head,

yeah i’d like to add that i don’t think “i’m safe now” because i’ve got a bright helmet on.

with regards to red, my dad is colour blind and cannot distinguish between red and green. i don’t think there are any great colours really, you’ve just got to ride carefully whatever you wear.
