Headlight Washers?

You're reading: Headlight Washers?

I bought my 05 XT as a snow excursion/foul weather vehicle. One thing it is sorely lacking is a headlight washer or cleaner. My experience with winter slush driving is that the headlights sure get grimed over to the point you’ll need to clean them quite often.

I’ve searched this site and not found anyone discussing a retrofit. Is this feasible? Anyone done this, or have any ideas?

I believe our member named Peaty has done this with one of his cars, and he said it was surprisingly difficult to do.

As far as I know, there are no Outbacks anywhere in the world with headlight wipers/washers – or maybe in Sweden?

BTW one thing that amuses me about my 98 is the way I have to buy three different wiper blade sizes for it. Are the other model years like that?

Yep, my 93 Impreza wagon was like that, and my 97 Outbacks are like that.

For the OP, I don’t think it’d be very easy to make something like this for yourself. Very few vehicles have such a system, I think most manufacturers believe that the consumers see it as “just one more thing to break” (I know I do) and don’t want to spend the money on it.

thanks for the input.

“one more thing to break” used to be the line my parents used on those crazy power windows and power locks.

I’m not trying to be a contrarian, but if they can put a squirter on your windshield that’ll last the life of the car, the same thing on the bumper would not seem to be any big deal.

Resurrecting an old thread because this problem hasn’t been sloved for 05-08 dirt and salt collectors, AKA headlights.

I noticed that the OB’s across the pond get headlight washers and HID-Xenon lights (bi-xenon in Sweden?). Just wondering if anyone can confirm that the headlight washer is built into the headlight or mounted somewhere else, bumper? It would be sweet to be able to buy the headlights (LHD of course) and get both HID and washers as an upgrade.

And has anyone retrofitted a washer system on to their 05-08?

For the UK market, 2008 Legacy Saloon, Legacy Sports Tourer and Outback models get HID lighting – for which there is an EC requirement to fit washers and auto levelling (headlamp or suspension).

Checking on www.subaru.co.uk the specification is there but the pictures don’t show the washers!

Across all brands here, where headlamp washers are fitted, they’re invariably in the bumper – some stick up all the time, others are flush and only raise when operating.

Next time I’m in the dealer showroom, I’ll have a look.

Thought I’d have a look at their German site. Same, same. You cannot tell where the washers would be on the OBW or the Legacy Wagon. (That sexy, sexy legacy wagon which they still sell here.) It is quite easy to see the washers on the Impreza, the Forester and the Tribeca (little plates on the bumper which would pop up when you use the washer). You cannot see them on the Legacy, the Outback or the Justy.

Have a looksee for yourself:

Under, as you might have guessed, “Modelle” is where you can look at the models. The one word that may look unfamiliar is “gebrauchtwagen” but this simply means used cars.

Careful reading reveals that the OBW is equipped with a washing system. You can see it if you look at the specs/price sheet here:

http://www.subaru.de/outback-spec-19.pdf

on page 10/12, you see where it says Aussenausstattung (external equipment), if you look down, it says: “Bi-Xenon Scheinwerfer mit Hochdruck-Reinigungsanlage” which, directly translated, means: Bi-Xenon Headlights with High-pressure cleaning system.

I, like Ruperts, am now curious and may go down to the showroom to see it for myself.

When I was driving a rented 523 BMW Wagon (does that mean 2.3L in a 5 series?! why, yes, it does. It would go 245 Km/h downhill) I found that I was still cleaning the headlights when I cleaned the windshield at the filling station although it too was equipped with “Bi-Xenon Scheinwerfer mit Hochdruck-Reinigungsanlage.” My thought would be that it was nice to have if the vehicle came with it but the headache of installing it after the fact would just not be worth it.

My VW Touareg has a similar high pressure headlight washer system and it does a real good job in keeping the headlights clean! It would be nice to have something like that for the Subaru!

Pour the salt in. I looked at the Touareg, like it a lot. But the one I wanted was the 72,000 dollar one with the diesel. Talk about some torque!

Somone did it on USMB. There is a lot of work involved due to US spec bumpers to make it work. You have to drill/cut through the metal bumper reinforcement. it can be done.

I had these on a previous car, a ’03 BMW 325i wagon with HIDs. They were OK, but not 100%…they still left a film of dirt on the headlight. I also had a ’99 Saab 9-5 that had wipers as well for the headlights (no HIDs), much better but you had to keep replacing the wiper arms for that. $$$. Plus one wiper eventually sagged below the headlight making the car look a little dopey.

I would rather just squeegee the headlights off at a gas station or wipe them with some paper towel.

Plus I found any car with these blows through windshield washer fluid like no tomorrow.

I have the V8 with air suspension (the V10 was not available when I bought mine). the V8 has a few more hp’s than the V10, but a little less torque, but still plenty! I like it a lot, and I do real off-roading with it out West!

ooo i like that, but not 200.00 like that.

That does give me ideas though.

All you need are two nozzles, a pump, and a check valve and your in business.

Indeed, JC Whitney used to sell something similar but far less expensive. They must no longer carry it though, because I can’t seem to locate it on their website.

Used to have these on my Volvo 850. they “rawked”

Headlight Washers?

Since wipers don’t really work on curved lenses, I wouldn’t mind jets still, and I sorta want the pop-ups on the subaru a-la JDM Urban Selection and EU models.

Youtube link w/ Video and old Japanese football (Soccer) Player, but with the pop-ups

I wonder how they work, does it just pop out from pressure from the washer jet or are they motorized? Also does the headlight assembly include these or are these attached to the bumper cover? If the headlight assembly was all one (HID and washers) unit I could see a pair in my future. I wonder how much those would cost?
