i have both a 3/4 and full face helmets. it is getting to the point where i would rather freeze my face off than wear the full face helmet. my ears are folding in places they’re not meant to fold. my ears are really torn up right now. is there a special way to take a helmet off without sacrificing a ear???

post by honkerman on oct 27, 2008 19:56:33 gmt -5

your helmet might be just a tad too tight…or maybe your ears are too big.

You're reading: How to take off a full face helmet??? Ouch! |

for the first problem, either switch to the 3/4, or get a larger size full helmet, or try several until you find one that fits you just so.

for the second, talk to a plastic surgeon. ;d

i don’t know really. i started wearing a full face helmet a number of months ago, and at first it was tough.
but after doing it a bunch of times it got easier and easier. either that or the helmet got broke in and loosened up some.
it sort of sounds like the helmet is too small, or that particular model does not fit correctly. so you may have gotten the wrong helmet in that case. not all helmets are the same.

hello halfnip:
i had problems using a full face helmet, specially because i wear glasses, i ended up buying a modular style helmet and found it much easer.

post by halfnip on oct 27, 2008 20:16:07 gmt -5

i think my ears are just to damn big. it must be my french blood.

i’ve been wearing a 3/4 helmet since i got my scooter. the dealer told my my full face helmet fit perfectly in the shop but dammit i thought i was going to cry at work. maybe my helmet and ears aren’t broken in yet. i think i’ll let my ears heal for a couple days and try again.

it seems that the helmet will fit and go on better with some use, the plastice will spread at the bottom with you pulling the straps outward. the mavement is not much, but does make it less of a squeeze to get it on. the modular designs will have more give in this manner too. the cheek pads will compact a bit with use too, but you might just have a helmet that is too small. if it sits comfortably once it is on, i would try to ‘wear it in’ for some more time to see if it becomes friendlier.

if you wear glasses, learn to put them on after the helmet is on your head, no helmet that fits well will have sufficient room to allow the thing to slide over the temples.

getting a properly fitting full face helmet is probably as difficult as a woman getting a properly fitting swimsuit for many.

most manufacturers only accommodate 3 or 4 head shapes at best. it’s not as straight forward as small, medium or large.

arai makes the broadest range of full face helmets and have models for 19 different heads shapes in medium alone. of course they start at $400.

my modulars are xl shells. the liners are large. if i had a problem with tightness, i would naturally opt for an xl liner.
as it were. my eyeglasses are not a hinderance when pulling on/off my helmet. i have a snug fit and that’s good.

in your case, maybe if your fit is a problem, check your liner in for a larger one if possible and maybe that might handle your problem.

i have a full face and find it fits well without ripping my ears off. to put it on, i hold both chin straps and pull gently outward when putting it on. i wear glasses and do not put them on until after i have the helmet in place. once i have the helmet on, it is very comfortable without any pressure points including my ears. it may very well be as others have said that the helmet you have is just too small. i would try some on at a local b&m dealer to see if it is related to the helmet being too tight.

on the other issue, plastic surgery is not necessary if you carry a roll of duct tape. ;d how to take off a full face helmet??? ouch! |

i wear a full-face all the time and honestly feel naked without it. do yourself a favor and buy a good helmet and not a cheap one. my head is worth a lot more than the 350.00 i paid for my shoei and it fit’s so well, it’s like i’m not even wearing one.

you could try wearing a skull cap underneath your helmet. something thin that goes over your head and keeps your ears flat. that might improve comfort. i tried wearing a bandana under my helmet once but i found it made my sunglasses uncomfortable at the temples so it might be a personal preference thing…

how close should the chin piece be to your mouth and chin in a full face helmet?

i started with a 3/4 helmet with face shield, and for comfort, it’s great. but i believe that the full face helmet has

to be safer, and i thought it would also be warmer in cold weather, and quieter. so far, i can’t say it is warmer or quieter. but i still like the added security i think i have.

but i struggle putting mine on, too. using the chin straps does help, but it is still tough. can’t put it on with my glasses on, that’s for sure. when it is on, it is comfortable except for the cheek pads, which i believe will loosen up a bit, and the fact that any movement i make with my mouth or jaw causes me to hit the chin bar. i’ve actually bit my lip because of my helmet once!

if my mouth is practically scraping the chin bar, is the helmet too small? i t seems to me that moving up one more size would make the helmet loose around my head.

i have to second the shoei – i tried on many helmets at cycle gear and you can just feel the difference in comfort. i wear glasses with my full face with no problems. i went in wanting to spend $150 and ended up buying the $369 shoei (although i talked them down to $300 in the end heh)

the difference between a $150 helmet and a $500 is fit. if you are one of the lucky ones who can find a good fitting helmet for $150 be happy.(probably more than half of all riders can).

when i put mine on i sometimes get an ear folded forward or top folded down. i find if i put the helmet on and take it by the chin, moving it from side to side, head held still inside, helmet slides around head and then pull chin of helmet forward, any folded ears are released and i have more space at the front of the helmet for my nose and mouth. i think ones head moves into the back lining better that way. my helmet is a snug fit and is very comfortable to wear. i believe a too big helmet is a helmet that will come off when things turn nasty.

i’ve been wearing full face helmets my whole life and have found that there are some that want to rip my ears and hair off when i remove the helmet, and some that i can don and remove without any problems. the key is the fabric that is used in the liner as well as the form construction in the liner.

when seeking for that “right” helmet try a trick i started using about 10 years ago and see if it works for you: look for a helmet that has “ear holes” in the padding that could accommodate ear phones. there are lots of helmets made with that specific purpose in mind. those helmets enable you to wiggle the helmet around a little bit after you put it on and your ears relax into a normal recessed area. and they seem to use the better liner materials in those helmets so your ears slide in and out instead of being ripped off.

years ago folks started the marketing myth, “more expensive means better fit and safety” when it came to helmets. they lie. then came the phrase, “isn’t your head worth $500.00?” marketing…. they are worse than salesmen. here are three extremely reasonably priced full face helmets that don’t rip of your ears. i have personal experience with them and my dumbo quality auditory organs.

(you can read a brutally honest review on this $89.00 helmet at www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/sparx/s-07/ . can anyone name any other helmet manufacturer that will send you a new helmet for free if your current helmet is involved in a crash?)
