spilled oil all over my tire how do i get it off

i’m a retard and left the oil fill cap off after changing the oil and it got all over my bike and the rear tire. now i’m totally not confident at all as far as traction. how do i get it off? i bought some wheel cleaner that said cuts grease and some comet scrub stuff. i was thinking to use that spray and scrub and rinse with water. the thing is i have like an hour of daylight left and tomorrow i’m leaving for a 500 mile ride to illinois. what timing. i’m thinking i’ll be ok for the straight highway ride there and will worry about cleaning the tire when i get to illinois. any suggestions? i know i can’t be the only one to have done this.

u could probably use some very fine sandpaper and just rub the tire down. someone else may want to confirm with this

    i’ve read
who oil/ petrolium products break down the rubber in our softer tires. how much oil? if it took a bath, i would prob. do away with it-

tire cleaner in itself can be very slippery as well. i am sure a nice brake stand would burn it offspilled oil all over my tire how do i get it off

wipe off the worst and then treat it like a new tyre. it wont take long before it is ‘scrubbed in again’

i remember reading an interesting tech article in one of the big cycle mags a long time ago (possibly by kevin cameron..?), discussing a similar subject. the cliff notes version basically said
who oil contamination on a rubber tire is not nearly as bad as you’d think, having to do with the fact
who petroleum is a major ingredient in making rubber tires in the first place, and the chemistry involved meant that the oil “bonded” with the rubber much more readily than, say, antifreeze, so the slippery quality of theoil was reduced dramatically.
who’s not to say a big puddle of standing oil won’t make the tires slip, but if you wipe off any excess with a rag and maybe give the tire a quick wash with plain old soapy water (as well as the rest of the bike…), that’s all the cleaning you’ll need to do.

like paddy said, use a little caution when you ride, scrub the tire in like it’s new, and i wouldn’t give it any more thought.

i agree, just wash the tire while you wash your bike. scrub the tire in again and it will be fine.

hell yeah, burn that oil off! tires are mostly made of petroleum in the rubber anyways. don’t sweat it. now if some of that oil got on the brakes you are screwed.

    tire oil

yeah, i washed it, used some commet cleaner power and actually it feels pretty good and tacky when i rub my fingers accros it. i’ll take it easy for a while though. thought it would be harder to get off. it seemed to be absorbed by the tire almost. it almost seems stickere than the part i didn’t spill it on. i may try the burnout technique. thanks

oh, and it did get all over my rear brake. it doesn’t work very well now. maybe i’ll hold it down when i’m on the highway a little to see if it helps and if not i think i might need new pads on there anyway.

if its on the rear tire you can put it on the stand , crank it, and put it in gear at an idle. as the tire rotates you can use a 4 inch grinder and wire wheel to scrub the tire. i use this method to scrub in the tires every time i put a new one on. the front tire can be done in a similar fashion, but without the benefit of the engine rotating it for you…
