You're reading: Tried to change Headlight bulb

tried to change out the projector h7 bulb.

tried to change headlight bulb

i removed more pins than the manual suggested but the liner barely budges.

any tips?

are you pulling all 10 pins to drop the entire liner?

looks like easier work pulling the bumper and lights for hid??

i strongly suggest removing the bumper and replacing both low beam bulbs. it is easier to line the bulbs up properly with the headlight assembly out of the car. it is a bit of a pain but can be done in about an hour. search for hid install. you will find a thread with pictures and a link to bumper removal. i have seen people do bulbs with the bumper on the car but the car will need to be off the ground with the wheel removed and it will be a swearing match to get it out and back together. i hope you didn’t buy sylvania silver star bulb as you will be doing this again in 5-8 months. those have an extremely short life. good luck.

if you’re going through the fender well you’ll need jack stands and to remove the tires. you’ll need to remove all the pins back to the axis of the strut (including the one tdc of the fender well). don’t forget the ones holding the bottom flap under the bumper. only then can you pull the liner back behind the rotor and start blindly fishing for the plug and that !)(@#$&!)(@&# wire spring that holds the bulb in the socket.

if you’ve gotten this far, you really should replace the stockers with the osram 65w h9 bulb on an h7 base. 50% increase in lumens and the lamp optics manage them beautifully.

yeah the owners manual makes it look easy by turning the wheel and pulling down the fender liner. i’ve been through doing these “easy maintenance” items in the past and found them not always so easy. at least subaru is making some things (oil change).

i did this a few weeks ago. get it up on jack stands and remove the fender liner completely. do both sides while you are working on it. passenger side is easier that the drivers side. it also helps if you have small hands.

i’m sure it’s easy to take off. putting it back on is what i’m worried about. tried to change headlight bulb i will have to be able to do it alone.

i just replaced my headlights last monday. one of them burnt out after 36k. i hope you are planning on changing both because if the one died then the other is not long for this world either.

putting the front back on isn’t hard it can just be a bit of a pain to get the two sides to snap in like they should.

32k and lost the drivers side low beam. via the wheel-well with the tire removed, is impossible for me to access. couldn’t get my hand in to unclip the bulb. put it all back together and went to the dealer. what a ridiculous design…

shouldn’t be a problem, there is plenty of flex in that bumper. just have some cardboard or something down on the ground so you don’t scrap the bottom when taking it off.

pull the 20-30 clips, then give a gentle lift and tug on each side.

install is reverse, but using a nice tap to get it seated on the hooks/brackets on each side.

plenty of write ups and easier then pulling a wheel and fender liner.
