if you have “dull yellow” lights now, that means you def have halogen bulbs and not hid/xenons. this means that your headlights will not have the drivers required to run hid bulbs, and you basically have three options:

1) get a pair of oem hid headlights and fit them – given the cost of pre-facelift headlights (~$600ish used per headlight) this would not appear to be a cost-effective option
2) get an aftermarket hid kit – these are all over ebay, expect to pay about $100 for a good one
3) replace your halogen bulbs with led bulbs – honestly i think the best approach here, you can get good ones for $40 a pair off ebay. i bought a pair for my wife’s mazda 3 and they’re absolutely amazing, just as good (if not better) than hids. i replaced my full beams with leds and it’s like daylight in front of the car now.

as far as i know all xfrs came with bi-xenon (hid) headlights, but even they can and do go weak and yellow after several years.
easiest way to tell for sure is remove one of the round rubber dust covers off the back of the headlight assembly (very easy, 1/4 turn twist and it falls off) and look in with a torch/flashlight. if you have hids you will see the igniter box on the back of the globe, a largish rectangular silver box. if no such box then you have halogens.
stock 2010 xfr hid globes are osram xenarc d1s 4600 k temperature but you can get nicer ones with brighter/whiter light of 6000 k for not much more than the stock globes.
for a my 2010 make sure they are d1s and not the later/different d2s or d3s which won’t work.

i noticed the other day that there are small stickers on the top of my light units that state that they are xenon. i hadn’t noticed them until then. have a look under the bonnet on the top of the light units.

also, there’s a useful answer in this thread:

okay do i have to remove the whole headlamp assembly to see this remember i’ve only owned this car for a month and i’m still getting used to it i read the owner’s manual but it also said that it could come with two different like this is so confusing and stupid i’m sure i’ll get used to this eventually but coming from a corvette where it is so easy i guess i’ll just have to take it apart

they are d1s for the xenon bulb in the headlight that came with the xfr. i wouldn’t go much above the 4200 level. while 6000 is much whiter / a bit blue tinged it’s light output and therefore how it lights up the road is weaker

note that the full beam is a separate bulb (hence bi-xenon) and that is an h7 i believe. i’d change both at the same time as the headlight unit is a pain to get out if you have the washer jets attached.

okay well i don’t understand how to find out if they have the right headlight that’s bi-xenon or not it’s an xfr 2010 and i don’t have the window a little washers for the headlights i don’t have those so i’m just curious if it was an option or is there an easier way for me to check without taking the entire headlight assembly out and the manual doesn’t help because it tells you that you can have the halogen or you can have the other bulb so that doesn’t even help

no you don’t have to remove the headlight assembly to check this, although removing the assembly is actually fairly easy, i did it literally dozens of times across my xfs and xfr.
just reach in behind the headlight, find the round plastic/rubber dust cover and give it a turn/tweak to unlock it then pull it off.
also take a tip from prolepsis, you may have stickers on top of the headlight assemblies that tell you if they are hid or not (but i don’t remember either my xfs or xfr having these stickers).

if it’s a usa spec 2010 xfr then it’s definitely bi-xenon. standard in premium and xfr.

you should have headlight washers. see the silver shiny piece at the bottom of the headlight assembly between the two main lamps. that pops out and sprays the headlight unit every 5-6 times that you clean the windscreen

enzo,
a north american 2010 xf supercharged (which is what yours is, not an xfr although both use the same headlights) comes from the factory with a bi-xenon hid low beam (or “dipped beam”) projector lamp set outboard and a separate halogen high beam (or “full beam”) lamp set inboard. later “facelift” models used a combined outboard unit only. and yes, you do have headlight washers, cleverly hidden when not in use. my model uses exactly the same headlights as yours.
